How to Keep Your Cool When the Mercury is Rising

When the heat is rising to record-breaking levels, it can be really tough to stay cool. This summer, I found that my air conditioner had trouble keeping up with the temperatures. It wasn't that the AC wasn't working, it was just that I couldn't seem to get my house cooled down as much as I wanted. I worried that I would have to replace the whole AC system. Luckily, I have a good friend who works as an HVAC contractor. He took a look at my system and gave good news -- it didn't need to be replaced. Instead, he shared a lot of tips for helping my air conditioner work more efficiently, as well as some ideas to help supplement the AC and keep the house cooler. I'm using those tips to create this blog to share ways for all of us to keep cool on the hottest days.

2 Easy Ways To Improve Your HVAC Capabilities

When it comes to HVAC, efficiency is the name of the game. This is why manufactures of condensers, furnaces, pumps, and evaporators are always touting the energy efficiency qualities of their new products. Of course, having energy efficient appliances is the most important way to keep your HVAC system cost down. However, there are other elements within the system that can greatly effect the efficiency and productivity of these appliances. This article explains three ways you can get the most out of your HVAC system by simply doing some regular maintenance to some of the rudimentary components:

Improve Your Duct Efficiency

Most of your ducks and events are within the walls of your building, so you cannot really work on that. However, a small percentage will be exposed, especially in your attic or basement. These are the most vulnerable sections of your duct system, especially in the rooms that are not temperature controlled, like a garage or basement. That is, you can lose a lot of heat through your ducts in these rooms. This is why it is such a good idea to simply wrap them with fiberglass insulation. This is a very easy and quick job. If you just buy some large rolls of fiberglass insulation, you could wrap them around your ducts, cut them to size, and tape them down. By slowing down heat loss in your ducts, you can improve airflow into your rooms.

Fix Your Condenser Hose

Another simple component that is often overlooked when it comes to HVAC maintenance is the condenser hose. This short hose is vital because it connects your condenser to the duct system. It is also on the outside of your property, where it is exposed to the elements. Since it is on the back side of the condenser, it is not visible and most homeowners never really think of checking it. But, you should check and maintain your condenser hose as frequently as possible. It can get knocked off of the fittings, it can get cut or punctured, or it could get kinked. All of these problems prevent airflow in and out of the condenser unit, dramatically hampering the functionality of your HVAC system.

As you can see, it is very important that you maintain the simple components, especially if you have modern, ultra officiant appliances. Let the professionals service your expensive appliances while you make sure these simple components are also working properly.
