How to Keep Your Cool When the Mercury is Rising

When the heat is rising to record-breaking levels, it can be really tough to stay cool. This summer, I found that my air conditioner had trouble keeping up with the temperatures. It wasn't that the AC wasn't working, it was just that I couldn't seem to get my house cooled down as much as I wanted. I worried that I would have to replace the whole AC system. Luckily, I have a good friend who works as an HVAC contractor. He took a look at my system and gave good news -- it didn't need to be replaced. Instead, he shared a lot of tips for helping my air conditioner work more efficiently, as well as some ideas to help supplement the AC and keep the house cooler. I'm using those tips to create this blog to share ways for all of us to keep cool on the hottest days.

If you feel like the air in your home has been dustier than usual and that your air quality has been poor, it may be time to have your furnace cleaned. Over time as a homeowner, this is something that you should be having done annually, along with changing out the filters. Here are some signs that you need to have this service done.

Yellow Flame

If you can see into the burner of your furnace and the flame is yellow, this is a problem. This indicates that the burner is dirty and the gas isn't burning off entirely. This is a risk for the home and you need to have the unit cleaned and tuned up.

High Energy Bills

Your energy bill shouldn't be increasing monthly even though you aren't increasing the set temperature in the home. A dirty furnace with a clogged or dirty filter has to run longer and work harder to get the heat that you need. If the energy bills are rising, this is a sign you need your furnace cleaned.

Poor Air Quality

The furnace is circulating air through the ducts in your home and then air is getting sucked back in through the cold air returns. If you have a dirty furnace, dusty ducts, and dirty, clogged filters, this air is just circulating through the house. This will greatly diminish the air quality. Consider getting the ducts cleaned at the same time as the furnace.

The cleaning will not only improve the efficiency, but it's also going to help extend the life of your furnace and allow the professionals to look for repair needs. Here are some of the things that will happen when the unit is cleaned:

  • System diagnostic testing
  • Coil cleaning and inspection
  • Electrical examination
  • Filter replacement
  • Air pressure cleaning for internal chambers
  • Lubricate mechanical components

The location of your furnace and the make and model can alter what you need done. There are a lot of different things that the heating service expert may have to do.

If you know that your furnace isn't running as well as it could be and that you haven't had it serviced or maintained in years, it's time to get a professional to your home to do the work. There are a lot of different things that can be done to clean not only the furnace, but also the ducts and vents as well.
