How to Keep Your Cool When the Mercury is Rising

When the heat is rising to record-breaking levels, it can be really tough to stay cool. This summer, I found that my air conditioner had trouble keeping up with the temperatures. It wasn't that the AC wasn't working, it was just that I couldn't seem to get my house cooled down as much as I wanted. I worried that I would have to replace the whole AC system. Luckily, I have a good friend who works as an HVAC contractor. He took a look at my system and gave good news -- it didn't need to be replaced. Instead, he shared a lot of tips for helping my air conditioner work more efficiently, as well as some ideas to help supplement the AC and keep the house cooler. I'm using those tips to create this blog to share ways for all of us to keep cool on the hottest days.

It should help you decide if one will be functional for your home.

They Work Great in Small Rooms

Ductless heat pumps work great in small are very convenient because you can basically by one, plug it in, and have it warming up your room within the matter of hours. Most home improvement stores sell a variety of heat pumps for less than $200. Their capacity and price depends on the BTU rating. The higher the BTUs, the larger, the more expensive, and more productive the unit will be.

Ductless heating systems are great for single rooms or studio apartments. They obviously have very limited range, so they can't be relied on for heating multiple rooms at once. Because of this, if you have a large home, you will need to have multiple pumps through your house.

They Consume A Ton of Electricity

Since heat pumps only use electricity, they can cause your energy bills to spike if you are using them for hours at a time. That is, even though initial cost of ductless heat pump is minimal, running them to heat is not going to be very efficient. It will ultimately cost more than a central heating system. Since they have limited ranges, ductless heat pumps are often used in homes that already have central heating.

They are Great for Supplemental Heat

Homeowners will often put them in basements or other rooms in their home that don't receive adequate airflow. It could be a great supplemental source of heat, but you definitely shouldn't rely on it if you are trying to heat up your entire home.

They Have Less Effective Filters

It is also worth mentioning that the filtering system in ductless heat pumps aren't as substantial or effective as those in central HVAC systems. They circulate air better, reduce allergens more effectively, and prevent odors.

As you can see, ductless heat pump can be functional and a worthwhile investment, but they aren't always the best solution. If you think that one will solve your heating problems, it is a very cost effective investment. Contact a company, like Metro Mechanical Services, for more help.
